A while back, I read an article about making your own homemade floor cleaner. In our house, we have three different types of floors (hardwood, tile, linoleum). I have always had a hard time finding a cleaning solution that worked on all three…until now. The original article I read made a similar solution in a mop bucket. While I am much to frugal to use a Swiffer mop, I also detest mopping from buckets. It seems counter productive to use dirty mop water to wash the floors.
The solution to this was buying a Rubbermaid Reveal Mop. This is seriously one of my favorite cleaning tools. The microfiber pads clean great and are washable. I have washed mine a million times and they still work like new. The best thing about this mop is that you can fill the solution bottle with any solution you want (unlike Swiffer)!!!! This mop costs about $20 but will pay for itself quickly if you are currently using a Swiffer. I have also seen coupons for it in the past so definitely look for coupons before you buy.
A few weeks ago, I experimented a bit with creating a homemade solution for in my mop bottle and I have perfected it. My floors could not be shinier. This solution works great to remove dirt and everything else that gets on the floor and leaves a great shine behind. I have had great results with it on hardwood, tile and linoleum.
Here is how you make it in the mop bottle:
5-6 drops of dish soap
1/2 c. of white vinegar
Then fill to top with very warm water.
This is so quick and easy to make and costs pennies per batch. Much better than buying liquid floor cleaner that can easily cost $5 a bottle. I don’t think I will ever use anything else on my floors. You MUST try this. Just look at my floors!
Have you ever made your own cleaning solution? I would love to hear from you!

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you
wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that,
this is wonderful blog. A fantastic read. I’ll certainly be back.

Your floors are so shiny! Just one question, since I don’t own a mop bottle, how much water is it to “fill to the top”?

If you are making it in a bucket I would use about 2 cups of white vinegar. Let me know how it works as I have never made it this way!

Kelly, awhile back I found a recipe like this one only was for bucket. I did not realize I could use it in a spray bottle and simply mop over it and let dry! Much easier for me since I am handicapped and unable to carry the bucket once it is filled, so run back and forth with the mop!
Also, my recipe recommends using 1/2 cup fabric softener to give it a better shine. From your pics I don’t think it is really necessary!

yes this makes the floor pretty shiny but it would interesting to see how the fabric softener works too. thanks for the tip. Hope this works well for you!

How much does the mop bottle you used take? ie, how much water did you add to the dishwash soap and vinegar?

For my 700 square feet of ceramic tiles I use half a Reveal bottle of water, and half white vinegar. I then add one tablespoon of Pine-Sol. As it turns out that is exactly the amount that Pine Sol recommends for Pine-Sol pail alone. I decided on this mixture after comparing the Pine-Sol and vinegar each alone and then decided to just mix them. As an Industrial Chemist let me point out that 50% vinegar is VERY dilute acetic acid. Also, don’t sweat all of the Pine-Sol chemical warnings online and that VERY THIN residual film left behind on the ceramic tiles.
